General practitioner Mark Pico believes that the process of quitting vapes is different from overcoming a regular nicotine addiction. He revealed effective ways to reduce cravings for tobacco replacement systems in an interview with the Daily Mail.
Pico believes that vape smokers, in addition to chemical dependence, develop a strong habit of bringing their hand to their mouth. According to him, many become accustomed to stealthily taking puffs even in public places or at work, and stopping this behavior can be harder than simply quitting smoking.
The doctor thinks that such persistent cravings arise because the brain associates the repetitive hand movement with pleasure and stress relief. Therefore, he advised people quitting vapes to keep their hands occupied during the withdrawal process. This could be stress-relief toys, a smooth stone, or some healthy snacks. Pico also suggested carrying a sketchbook and pencils. He stated that creative activities help the brain distract from old habits and patterns.
Additionally, the specialist recommended trying to solve puzzles or crosswords, as well as playing video games. However, Pico urged to use this option in moderation, no more than 45 minutes a day. The doctor added that chewing gum can sometimes help reduce strong cravings to smoke.
