The doctor warned against self-treating abdominal pain with analgesics.

Gastroenterologist Alexandra Metelina discussed the four typical mistakes many people make when they have abdominal pain. According to the doctor, the first mistake is self-treating abdominal pain with analgesics and any means that mask the symptoms. "Pain relief can mask serious pathology, such as appendicitis, inflammation, urological and gynecological issues. The pain may temporarily subside, but the cause will not go away, and time can sometimes resolve everything in such conditions," the gastroenterologist warned.

Another common mistake Metelina mentioned is sharply cutting back on food or completely refusing to eat. The doctor explained that hunger can lead to problems with gastrointestinal motility, and its sensitivity will increase.

Another mistake is often made by people who feel abdominal pain after overeating. The gastroenterologist explained that they take enzymes, but the pain arises not from their deficiency, but from the overstretching of the intestinal wall. In such a situation, enzymes do not help solve the problem. The doctor also identified the use of sorbents for abdominal pain as a no less dangerous mistake.

Finally, according to Metelina, one should not apply heat to the abdomen if it hurts. The doctor clarified that heat can exacerbate inflammation and cause complications, including in cases of appendicitis.
