"The brain of a grandmaster is like a powerful computer calculating thousands of options."

Actor and director Dmitry Iosifov has turned 60! He played Buratino in the Soviet children's film, and when he grew up, he began to make films himself. Although he graduated from the acting faculty of VGIK, he directs more.

Dmitry Iosifov's films and series "Diversant. Crimea," "Love of the Soviet Union," and sagas about empresses - Catherine II with Marina Alexandrovna and Elizabeth Petrovna with Yulia Khlynina - have been loved by millions. Recently, Dmitry finished filming a family movie about a young violinist with a bold character, in which Alexey Guskov plays the main male role. But we did not talk about that.

A few years ago, during the work on the film "World Champion" - about the match for the chess crown between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi - a loud incident occurred. Eyewitnesses reported that Iosifov, invited to play Mikhail Tal, made a professional remark to the film's director Alexey Sidorov (known for the series "Brigada" and the film "Fight with Shadow"). Sidorov could not stand the constructive criticism from his colleague and allegedly lost his temper.

However, as our insider reported, "Buratino" preferred not to escalate the scandal. Firstly, "smart people do not take offense at fools," and secondly, behind him is a whole creative dynasty: a wife who is an artist and a son who is a cameraman.

- Dmitry, there are rumors that a cult director hit you on set for suggesting he diversify his role, - the media delicately asked the jubilarian.

  • Such cases happen, - he said, shrugging. - For me, manifestations of bad behavior are a result of poor upbringing. This includes professional upbringing. European cinema, and especially Hollywood, is free from such disrespect for colleagues. Working with five German actors, I was struck by their professional culture: they not only accepted my remarks but also asked what could be improved. In contrast, some of our artists perceive, for example, remarks about their appearance on screen as a terrible insult. And after working hours, they are ready to leave the set without waiting for the command "Cut. Shooting is over."

- It turns out like in school: the bell is for the teacher, not for the students. And in cinema - not for the actors, but for the director.

  • Mikhail Gorevoy told me how on the set of Spielberg's film "Bridge of Spies," the great Tom Hanks personally handed him the script. Despite the fact that our actor knew the role by heart. "I help you emotionally, that’s what all good partners do," Hanks modestly explained.

- How was it working with Ivan Yankovsky, who played Anatoly Karpov, on the set of "World Champion"?

  • I shared with Vanya how to play a chess player. I explained that a grandmaster's brain is like a powerful computer calculating thousands of options. I advised him to mentally count down from 100 to zero during the game - this creates the necessary feeling of intense thought work in the eyes.

- How did you prepare for the role of Tal?

  • My childhood interests in mathematics and chess helped. While studying Tal's matches, I was fascinated by his paradoxical yet impeccable mastery: even when losing, he remained a true virtuoso.
