The craving for sweets is caused by the production of dopamine.

The desire to eat something sweet is due to evolutionary processes in the body, said gastroenterologist Ekaterina Kashukh. According to her, simple carbohydrates found in sweets are quickly broken down into glucose in the body, causing a sharp increase in its level in the blood. "The brain perceives this as receiving a powerful and quick source of energy, which is evolutionarily critical for survival. In response, the reward system is activated, releasing the neurotransmitter dopamine, which creates a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction," the specialist explained. The doctor added that shortly after the increase in glucose levels, there is a rapid decrease, which can provoke fatigue, irritability, and acute hunger. The doctor warned that if full meals are replaced with sweets too often, it may lead to excessive cravings for carbohydrates and a deficiency of other nutrients due to a poor diet.
