Kiwi and rye bread alleviate the symptoms of chronic constipation.

Scientists from King's College London have published the world's first evidence-based dietary recommendations for people suffering from chronic constipation. According to their findings, kiwi, rye bread, and mineral water with a high salt content can significantly alleviate the symptoms of the condition. The work is presented in Neurogastroenterology & Motility (N&M).

Supplements containing psyllium husk, specific strains of probiotics, and magnesium oxide have also been recognized as effective. These remedies improved the frequency and consistency of stools and enhanced overall well-being. At the same time, an analysis of more than 75 clinical studies showed that common recommendations — "eat more fiber" — lack compelling evidence of effectiveness.

The authors of the work note that the new recommendations will help doctors and patients better select nutrition and even manage symptoms independently without the constant use of medications.
