Cherries can improve memory and concentration in obese individuals.
Researchers from Texas A&M University have discovered that a cherry drink can enhance memory and concentration in obese individuals. In an experiment, the results of which were published in Nutrients, 40 volunteers with a body mass index ranging from 30 to 40 consumed 200 milliliters of a cherry powder drink or a placebo twice a day for a month. After just 30 days, participants in the 'cherry' group showed significantly better results in tests of short-term memory and attention.
As the researchers explain, the improvement is linked to polyphenols—natural compounds that reduce inflammation and protect brain cells. Meanwhile, biomarkers indicating cognitive impairments, such as neurotensin, increased only in those who received the placebo. This may suggest a protective effect of cherries against inflammatory processes affecting brain function.
The scientists emphasize that these are preliminary data: the study lasted only a month and included a small group of participants. However, the results suggest that cherries could be a simple and safe way to support cognitive health in overweight individuals.
