Researchers from Imperial College London (UK) have revealed several interesting aspects of the intimate lives of sparrow families.
Formation of a Family
The sparrow is a free-spirited bird, and its character reflects this. Every year, sparrows gather in one place, creating a real bird market. They chirp loudly, interrupting each other, trying to attract the attention of females. The females, in turn, closely observe the males, assessing their appearance and singing abilities. If a male attracts a female, she reciprocates, and a new pair is formed.
Reproduction of Sparrows
Most species of sparrows make at least two clutches per season, and some make up to five. The incubation of eggs lasts 11–14 days. The chicks hatch naked or with sparse down. The feeding of the brood in the nest lasts 14–17 days.
Reasons for Female Sparrow Infidelity
Although sparrows generally form traditional monogamous pairs, some females may cheat on their permanent partners and raise offspring with other males. British scientists attempted to determine what drives birds to betray and what consequences this has for females. The study was conducted in a reserve on Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel between England and Wales. The focus was on 200 males and 194 females that formed 313 monogamous sparrow families.
It was found that female marital infidelity is not related to romantic feelings but is driven by the desire to reproduce the healthiest and strongest offspring. However, infidelity has its consequences! Betrayed males begin to take revenge on their partners by bringing less food to the nest for the chicks. Sparrows start to suspect females of infidelity if they spend too much time outside the nest in the company of other males during the fertile period.
Interestingly, male behavior varies depending on the female. If they have a loyal partner, they take their parental responsibilities seriously and actively forage for food. In cases of suspected infidelity, males begin to neglect their parenting duties. It is also curious that the less active a sparrow was initially, the higher the likelihood that it will become a “cuckold” and find itself in a situation where its partner flies off to a more worthy suitor.
