Have you ever had the feeling that your dog understands your thoughts? This may be because our four-legged friends are capable of picking up on the unconscious signals you send them.
In a certain sense, dogs can be considered true observers of human nature: they spend a lot of time studying us and noticing connections between our reactions and behaviors that we often do not realize. For example, dogs can distinguish when you get up to take them for a walk or for lunch, and when you simply get up to attend to your own matters.
Research conducted with pet dogs confirms that they can recognize emotions such as stress and fear, as well as detect illnesses that we may not even be aware of. Their ability is partly explained by their acute sense of smell, but that is not the only factor!
How Dogs Perceive Our Behavior
When it comes to non-verbal communication, we usually pay attention to the facial expressions and body language of people. Dogs also know how to read our faces. A number of studies have shown that they can easily differentiate happy expressions from angry or bored ones. Moreover, dogs can match photographs of facial expressions with corresponding sounds.
For dogs, it is important to understand what our face expresses. For instance, when we open a box, emotions of excitement or disgust will help the pet decide whether to ask for something from that package.
Besides facial expressions, dogs are excellent at picking up the intonations of our voices and scents, which helps them distinguish us from one another. Recent studies have confirmed that dogs can recognize fear: they can differentiate T-shirts with the scent of a person who was scared (for example, while watching a horror movie) from those of someone watching something more calming.
Dogs can also see our fear and stress through changes in our bodies. One study found a connection between a person's testosterone levels and a dog's cortisol, or stress levels.
Numerous studies have confirmed that pets understand that if we are not in the room or if we simply turn away, they might get away with any mischief.
All these skills are acquired by dogs not only through their sense of smell but also through careful observation. Perhaps your pet is currently watching you closely!
