Interesting Discovery: Ants Can Serve as a Spider Repellent

It has been found that the chemicals released by European fire ants (Myrmica rubra) are capable of repelling certain species of spiders.

European fire ants (Myrmica rubra) are known for their aggressiveness and defensive mechanisms that are activated in the face of threats. When danger arises, the colony of these ants quickly organizes for defense, forming ranks and attacking adversaries with their painful bites.

Some spiders prefer to avoid areas where European fire ants have recently been present. Researchers suggest that the ants leave chemical trails that serve as danger signals for arachnids, as ants are sometimes their predators. This discovery could contribute to the development of spider repellents to keep them away from our homes and apartments.

“Many people have a fear of spiders, and there are no products on the market that can make them stay away from humans,” notes arachnologist Andreas Fischer from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada.

Fischer and his team placed black widows (Steatoda grossa) in a glass container with three interconnected chambers. The spiders avoided the chambers where European fire ants had previously been. Similar behavior was observed in Latrodectus hesperus (a type of black widow), Araneus diadematus (garden spiders), and Eratigena agrestis (funnel weavers).

“I hope people don’t start breeding European fire ants in their gardens and homes to combat spiders,” laughs Andreas. Ants are aggressive and difficult-to-eradicate pests.

Scientists plan to determine which specific chemical repels spiders and explore the possibility of synthesizing it in laboratory conditions. They then want to ensure that the resulting repellent is non-toxic and does not attract ants. After completing this research, the possibility of mass production of the product can be considered.

5 Interesting Facts About European Fire Ants (Myrmica rubra)

European fire ants typically inhabit forest and meadow areas, where they build their nests in the soil or under stones.
They release chemicals known as formic acids, which are used for communication within the colony and marking their territory.
European fire ants are predators and feed on small insects and other invertebrates.
Additionally, they can consume plant-based food, including nectar, plant juices, and seeds.
Sometimes they join forces with other species of ants, forming mixed colonies.
