What connects cats and Japanese researchers studying their behavior? Both possess an understanding of the basic principles of Newtonian mechanics, as well as the relationship between cause and effect.
A study by ethologists from Kyoto University has been published in the journal Animal Cognition. During the experiment, boxes were shaken in front of domestic cats, some of which contained an object.
When the box made sounds, the cat could determine the presence of an object inside by the sound, and vice versa. All the cats demonstrated an understanding of the relationship between the sound and the object in the box.
In the future, Japanese scientists intend to find out whether cats are aware of the connection between the characteristics of the sound and the size of the hidden object.
