Sloths Turned Out to Be Even Lazier Than Scientists Expected

Research has shown that the degree of laziness can vary. There are two families of these slow mammals: two-toed and three-toed sloths, and their metabolism differs significantly. It has been found that three-toed sloths have the slowest metabolism among all mammals.

Three-toed sloths are indeed a prime example of laziness.

To assess their metabolic rate, researchers captured representatives of both families and administered water containing isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen. After a few days, the sloths were recaptured to take blood samples and determine how quickly energy is expended in their bodies based on the amount of isotopes.

The results showed that the metabolism of three-toed sloths occurs 30% slower than that of two-toed sloths and slower than any other mammal not in a state of hibernation.

Sloths are very economical creatures and do not expend energy unnecessarily; however, even among them, there are differences: three-toed sloths move only when absolutely necessary, while two-toed sloths are more active. Additionally, three-toed sloths can adjust their body temperature according to the environment, almost like cold-blooded animals.

The results of the study were published in the journal American Naturalist.
