There are two kangaroos for every Australian, and this ratio does not always lead to harmony. Previously, kangaroos were culled, but now an effective way to control their population has been found — distributing hormonal contraceptives to females.
One kangaroo is an interesting sight, but many are a real problem.
Kangaroos damage agriculture, become victims of traffic accidents, and contaminate drinking water sources. Moreover, their population has reached such levels that they suffer from food shortages. As a result, the animals starve, weaken, become susceptible to diseases, and die.
Previously, the problem was addressed through culling: over 5 million kangaroos were killed each year. Eco-activists long advocated for a more humane approach, and finally, such a solution has been found. Now, social service workers will administer hormonal implants to kangaroos, similar to those used for long-term contraception in humans.
One injection provides effects for six years.
