Spotted gophers, listed in the Red Book of Belarus, have emerged from hibernation significantly earlier than usual.
This phenomenon is related to the abnormally warm weather. Ornithologist Sergey SHOKALO reported that he was able to find active animals in the Nesvizh district as early as the end of February. Usually, gophers emerge from their state of torpor at the end of March, but this year they woke up much earlier, and if the temperature drops again, they may fall back into hibernation.
According to the expert, the current awakening of the gophers is the earliest observed in history. However, this should not negatively affect their health, as there is already enough food in the form of grass.
In 2020, there were 12 colonies of these rodents in Belarus, but by 2023, unfortunately, only 4 remain, noted Sergey Shokalo.
