The Dog Trainer Explained the Reasons for Puppies' Fears

It happens that a brave puppy turns into a timid and fearful pet. This situation can alarm and even worry the owner. Why do fears arise in a puppy and how can you help it?

At a certain period, a puppy may begin to experience fear of things and phenomena that previously did not bother it. These can be household items, such as a vacuum cleaner, unusual sounds, or other objects in the environment.

Dog trainers emphasize that periods of fear usually begin after the puppy is separated from its mother, when it starts to explore the world independently while still being close to her. Later, around 4–6 months of age, when the puppy is completely weaned from its mother, a second stage of fears may begin. During this period, the dog starts to mature and actively explore the surrounding reality.

Experts note that fears may not manifest in all puppies. This is not always related to upbringing; more often, it is influenced by the individual characteristics of the animal's psyche.

“Therefore, we strongly recommend starting the socialization of the puppy as early as possible. By skipping any stage of socialization, we can provoke many fears in the dog,” the dog trainers assert.

The basic rules of cohabitation should be learned by the puppy from 2–3 months. If the socialization process is delayed, after 4–5 months, the dog will find it more difficult to trust the unfamiliar world around it. The more the dog explores the outside world during this period, the fewer behavioral problems it will have in the future. Dogs that have not undergone socialization may fear people, various sounds, unfamiliar objects, and react aggressively to any changes in the environment.

How to Help the Puppy

First of all, dog trainers recommend ensuring the puppy's health and checking whether a sudden change in behavior is a signal of illness. It is also worth analyzing whether the fear arose as a result of some event that negatively affected the dog.

“Dogs have what is called a fear period – this is a time when a puppy may start to fear the surrounding world, things, events, and sounds that previously did not bother it. This is a completely normal phenomenon. If the dog has not been frightened and has not had a traumatic experience, then with proper socialization and adequate owner behavior, this period will not negatively impact the pet's life in the future,” comments dog trainer Vladimir Golubev.

Fears are a normal part of growing up, which most often resolves on its own. Therefore, the owner should not try to raise a fearless dog at this moment. “If, for example, your puppy suddenly started to fear the vacuum cleaner, do not force it to approach this object, try to turn it on, explain that nothing bad will happen, or calm it with treats. This way, you will only reinforce the fear,” the specialists explain.

If the puppy is afraid of an object and hides behind you, allow it to do so, advise dog trainers. “Do not get nervous; calmly communicate with the dog at this moment, you can walk a little nearby, holding the pet in your arms, or approach the object yourself, showing that it is safe,” the experts recommend.

During fear periods, they advise incorporating developmental games, walking in various places, allowing the pet to explore the territory independently, and introducing the dog to other dogs, new people, sounds, and objects.
