How to Choose the Right Dog

Before getting a dog, it is essential to carefully determine the breed. Perhaps you have dreamed of a Collie since childhood, but will this animal be comfortable in your studio apartment? Or have you always wanted a Jack Russell Terrier, but are you ready to spend a lot of time walking with this active pet? Veterinarian Alexey Knyazkov explains how to choose the right dog breed and what to consider before purchasing.

The first thing to consider when choosing the right breed of dog is its needs. It is important to understand whether your pet will have enough space in the apartment and if you are ready for daily walks. “Dogs of all sizes, even decorative ones, need to be walked,” reminded Alexey Knyazkov.

If your apartment is small and you do not have time for long walks in the morning and evening, it is better to choose a small breed, such as a Chihuahua or a French Bulldog. “However, if you have a spacious house with a large yard where the dog can actively spend time, a shepherd or a Moscow watchdog would be a great fit in such conditions,” he added.

If you need a companion for sports and long walks, consider active Jack Russell Terriers or Belgian Shepherds.

Additionally, the expert advises taking into account that some breeds require more time for grooming: cutting, bathing, and brushing. If the future owner does not have time for these procedures, it is better to avoid such breeds.

“If family members are allergic to fur, it is advisable to choose breeds with short hair: Boxer, Rhodesian or Thai Ridgeback. Dogs with soft fur, such as Yorkshire Terriers, hardly shed,” added the veterinarian.

If there are children in the family, friendly breeds with moderate physical activity should be chosen. Labradors or Golden Retrievers would be an excellent choice. “These dogs get along well with children and fit perfectly into the family,” noted the expert. He also added that Bulldogs, Beagles, or Bedlington Terriers, known for their tolerance and loyalty, are suitable for families with children.

Another important aspect to pay attention to when choosing a dog is the pedigree. “Pay attention to hereditary diseases and the breeder's recommendations for care, nutrition, and maintenance,” added the veterinarian.
