When caring for sphinxes, it is important to pay attention to the condition of their skin and eyes. Veterinarian Alexey Bazylevsky noted that the lack of fur leads to increased sweating.
Care for a sphinx's skin:
— the skin of a sphinx requires regular care: it needs to be cleaned to prevent inflammatory processes;
— sphinxes have many sebaceous glands that secrete oil to protect against external factors. To remove the brown coating, use alcohol-free wet wipes or a soft cloth. Special attention should be paid to the area under the tail and around the genitals;
— many sphinxes enjoy swimming, so they can be accustomed to water procedures. However, frequent bathing can cause dryness and irritation of the skin;
— prolonged exposure to the sun can negatively affect the health of a sphinx.
How to properly bathe a sphinx:
— it is recommended to bathe a sphinx once every two weeks;
— use special gels and shampoos designed for this breed;
— the bath or basin should be filled with warm water so that the animal is in it up to its chest;
— avoid getting water in the pet's ears, do not place it under a shower or running water;
— after bathing, wrap the animal in a soft towel and keep it there until completely dry to prevent illness.
Care for the ears, teeth, and eyes of a sphinx
Sphinxes have large ears, which, in high temperatures and with a fast metabolism, leads to the accumulation of secretions. “It is better to clean the ears once a week with cotton swabs moistened with a special lotion. Do not go too deep to avoid damaging the eardrums. If the ears look dirty, red, and covered with dark crusts, this may indicate an infection. In this case, it is necessary to consult a veterinarian,” emphasizes Alexey Bazylevsky.
The expert also recommends closely monitoring the sphinx's eyes.
“During the day, a small amount of clear or brown discharge may accumulate on the mucous membrane of the eyes. This is normal, as they do not have eyelashes. If the discharge turns yellow, has a purulent smell, and is too watery, this may indicate an infection. In this case, contact a veterinarian immediately,” says the specialist.
The sphinx's eyes should be wiped from the outer corner to the inner corner. For this, use a bandage or cotton pad moistened with a special lotion or chamomile infusion.
“Teeth also require care. They are cleaned with special toothpaste. A toothbrush with soft bristles or a gauze pad is suitable for this procedure. Do not forget to gently massage the gums to avoid inflammatory processes,” advises the veterinarian.
Sphinxes are very clean animals, so their litter box must always be kept clean. Otherwise, the pet may start relieving itself in inappropriate places.
Sphinx and heat
Sphinxes love warmth and will always find the warmest spot in the house or stay close to their owner. In winter, these cats will need special clothing.
How to choose clothing for a sphinx:
— it should fit the animal's size exactly, as incorrectly sized clothing can cause skin irritation;
— exclude hard and prickly elements that can lead to skin chafing and subsequent infection;
— clothing should not restrict movement;
— prefer quality materials that will not lose color and shape after washing.
The recommended temperature in the room where the sphinx lives is 20–25 degrees. Many sphinxes prefer their bed or hammock to be near a radiator.
How to feed a sphinx
Sphinxes have a good appetite due to their high metabolism. Additionally, they have high heat loss, which requires energy replenishment.
Feeding recommendations:
— it is better to feed sphinxes at the same time: adults — 3–4 times a day, and kittens — 6–8 times;
— the diet should contain all necessary nutrients and vitamins;
— both ready-made feeds and only natural or cooked food are allowed. A mixed diet can be harmful to a sensitive digestive system;
— it is necessary to change the water frequently to maintain its cleanliness.
