Experts Reveal the Causes of Balance Disorders in Dogs

Not all dog owners are aware of this pathology. Nevertheless, among all disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems in animals, this condition is the most common. Canine experts explained what vestibular syndrome is in dogs and why it occurs.

What is Vestibular Syndrome

Simply put, it is a disorder related to balance disturbances. Due to this neurological disorder, a pet may exhibit symptoms that hinder its ability to lead a normal life: the dog may have an unsteady gait, tilt its head to one side, or fall over while moving. In the most severe cases, the animal may start to spin around in circles and be unable to rise.

It is believed that vestibular syndrome is most commonly seen in older dogs; however, it can affect pets of any age and breed.

Causes of Vestibular Syndrome

The most common cause of this disorder is otitis media and interna. This is usually a consequence of external otitis, which is inflammation of the external ear canal that extends from the outer ear to the eardrum. Additionally, polyps or other neoplasms, as well as vestibular neuritis, can cause middle ear damage.

The problem may also be associated with brain pathologies, and in rare cases, with toxic poisonings or metabolic disorders.

Recommendations for Owners

If any of the symptoms appear, it is advisable to make an appointment with a veterinary neurologist. The specialist will conduct the necessary diagnostics, usually an MRI or CT scan. If no structural changes are found during the examination, the veterinarian may prescribe additional laboratory tests.
