Many cat owners notice that their pets usually do not drink from the bowl where they eat. Some even prefer to drink water from the tap. The reasons for this behavior were explained by feline specialist and veterinarian Nikolai Leonov.
According to the specialist, this behavior is related to evolutionary traits inherited by domestic cats from their large wild ancestors.
"The thing is, water bodies where ungulates gather — the prey of lions and tigers — are often heavily contaminated. Therefore, both big and small cats prefer to drink running water," noted Nikolai Leonov.
The expert also emphasized that cats often tap the surface of the water with their paw before they start drinking. This allows the animals to sort of purify the water.
As they age, due to a protein-rich diet, cats may develop kidney problems, the veterinarian warned. Therefore, it is important for the owner to ensure that their pet drinks enough water.
Experts recommend placing the cat's water bowl away from the food bowl to prevent food remnants from contaminating the water during feeding. If the pet prefers running water, automatic drinking fountains can be installed.
