Obstetrician-Gynecologist Performs Emergency Cesarean Section on Female Gorilla

A baby western lowland gorilla was born at the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas as a result of an emergency cesarean section. This species is endangered, reports The Guardian.

According to the publication, a 33-year-old gorilla named Sekani was expected to give birth naturally in mid-February. However, the animal unexpectedly developed symptoms of preeclampsia—a serious pregnancy complication that sometimes occurs in primates and is characterized by high blood pressure.

Due to concerns for the health of both the gorilla and her baby, the zoo's veterinary team decided to perform an emergency cesarean section. They consulted gynecologists, explaining that the reproductive systems of humans and gorillas have much in common. Local obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Jamie Walker Erwin participated in the operation, who also invited an anesthesiologist and a neonatologist. According to her, the surgery was a “remarkable” event and the “highlight” of her career. “Such an opportunity comes once in a lifetime,” the publication quotes Dr. Erwin.

The newborn was named Jamila. Unfortunately, Sekani showed no interest in her baby, so the zoo specialists are currently training another 24-year-old female gorilla named Gracie, who will be expected to care for the infant. “The zoo management hopes that Gracie will be able to become a surrogate mother and exhibit the maternal behaviors necessary for the baby’s development: holding and carrying it, protecting it, cooperating with zoo staff during feeding, and teaching the baby important social skills,” the publication quotes a zoo representative.
