At a zoo in Cornwall County, UK, staff found an unusual solution to help 18-year-old alpaca named Giovanni, who was left without companions.
Previously, the animal lived with two other alpacas, but after their deaths, Giovanni found himself completely alone, which, according to the staff, he was struggling to cope with very badly.
As the zoo's operations director, G. Zammita, explained, the alpaca's condition was causing serious concern, and the animal required special care. The staff feared that prolonged loneliness could negatively impact his health and overall well-being.
In search of a solution, the zoo employees decided to install mirrors in the enclosure. It was hoped that the reflections would create a sense of the presence of other alpacas for Giovanni. To implement the idea, the staff reached out to caring individuals for mirror donations. Many responded to the call, and the experiment yielded results: the alpaca became calmer and was able to cope with negative emotions. This was reported by the BBC.
At the same time, the zoo emphasizes that this method of support is temporary. One of the regular visitors has already promised to donate two of his alpacas to the institution. After conducting the necessary tests and quarantine, the new animals are planned to be introduced to Giovanni, so he can have real neighbors.
