German Shepherds, bred in the late 19th century, although they are inferior in scent sharpness to some other breeds, remain among the most sought-after police dogs in the world due to their unique combination of intelligence, trainability, and versatility. Their ability to quickly master complex tasks makes them ideal candidates for rigorous service training.
However, one such shepherd named Sombra from Colombia stood out even against this backdrop. According to dog handlers, her sense of smell significantly surpassed that of other service dogs. Over the years, Sombra helped uncover many tons of narcotics and participated in hundreds of arrests, delivering a serious blow to the operations of criminal cartels.
The dog's effectiveness was so high that the country's largest drug cartel — the Gulf Clan — placed a $7,000 bounty on her head. This is a rare case where a direct threat from criminal organizations was directed at an animal.
For safety reasons, Sombra was transferred from El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá to other facilities under heightened security. After a long and distinguished career, she was ensured a peaceful retirement.
