Veterinarians Explain Whether Parasite Prevention is Necessary for Indoor Cats

Some pet owners, including cat owners, mistakenly believe that if their pet does not leave the house, then parasite treatment is unnecessary. However, untimely prevention of worms can lead to serious complications.

Even if a cat does not go outside, worm eggs can enter its body through the shoes or clothing of its owners, as well as through unprocessed food products such as raw meat, fish, and vegetables.

Veterinarians remind us that worms or their eggs may not be visible in the animal's feces. This depends on the stage of development, which is individual for each type of parasite.

The danger of worms lies in the fact that they “extract” essential nutrients from the pet's body. Parasites can damage the intestinal walls, which opens the way for various infections. In addition, worms release toxins that are harmful to the animal's health.

To prevent the development of parasitic diseases in pets, it is necessary to regularly administer anti-parasitic treatments. The first procedure for puppies and kittens should be done at 21 days of age, with a repeat treatment two weeks later. Veterinarians also recommend mandatory treatment against worms two weeks prior to vaccination.
