Dogs Help Treat Depression in Humans — Study

A study conducted by Spanish researchers at the Torrejón University Hospital showed that dog therapy significantly reduces anxiety and depression levels in elderly individuals with a diagnosed condition, as well as decreases medication consumption by 60%. This is reported by the Spanish veterinary portal Animal’s Health.

Researchers have found that the presence of dogs around patients helps improve interpersonal relationships, reduce feelings of loneliness, and enhance self-esteem and cognitive functions.

According to a report citing data from the Royal Canine Society of Spain (RSCE), the presence of dogs in medical facilities has led to a 60% reduction in the use of antidepressants. Additionally, the positive impact of dogs on patients with schizophrenia has been noted, as these patients typically are reluctant to visit doctors. When such patients were given the opportunity to interact with a dog during appointments, the number of missed consultations decreased by 80%.

This therapy method involves active interaction between a person and a dog, as the report indicates. This promotes the production of neurotransmitters responsible for emotional well-being, which in turn improves mood and alleviates the condition of patients with depression. Experts assert that this approach can be applied to treat various groups of people, including teenagers with communication difficulties, children with attention deficit and hyperactivity, as well as victims of physical and emotional abuse.

According to RSCE President José Miguel Doval, the presence of dogs in medical facilities creates an atmosphere perceived by people as a safe space for expressing emotions. “Activities with dogs have a positive therapeutic effect on people. Due to the strong bond between humans and dogs, companion animals will undoubtedly play an increasingly significant role in maintaining mental health within the public health system,” the expert noted.
