Guitarfish: a unique ray on the brink of extinction

The shark ray, or guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma), a unique creature with a flat body and distinctive tail, attracts the attention of researchers and ecologists.

This unusual fish, reaching lengths of up to 3 meters, inhabits the Indo-Western Pacific Ocean, preferring to spend time on the seabed and among coral reefs.

Bony spines, although not confirmed as a means of defense against predators, make the guitarfish even more interesting.

However, the population of this species is threatened with extinction. Guitarfish fall victim to hunting for their fins, which are used in cuisine, and spines that are sought after for jewelry, especially in Thailand. A 2023 study revealed the impact of a little-known "spine market," where the spines are valued as raw materials for creating amulets and rings.

The deterioration of coral conditions and the use of explosives in fishing also threaten the habitat of the guitarfish. Protective measures are urgently needed to preserve this unique species and its ecosystem.
