The Sphynx cat breed was developed in 1966. Surprisingly, the homeland of these animals is Toronto, Canada. These pets attract attention with their unusual appearance: lack of fur and numerous wrinkles. But why was such a breed created?
There is an opinion that Sphynx cats are completely hypoallergenic; however, this is not entirely true, as allergies arise from animal dander. Nevertheless, the absence of fur may reduce the degree of allergic reaction. But if the allergy does not completely disappear, why do Sphynx cats have no fur?
A Unique Cat
Initially, Sphynx cats were called Canadian hairless cats, as the first recorded appearance occurred in Toronto in 1966 when a domestic cat gave birth to a hairless kitten. This kitten, named Prune, became the foundation of the breeding program for hairless cats.
The mutation that leads to “baldness” is associated with a deficiency of the protein keratin, which is necessary for hair formation. Hair can form, but it has a more fragile structure and is easily damaged.
But why did scientists decide to continue breeding cats like Prune? There is an opinion that the goal of such selective work was to create a genetically stable cat with high hybrid potential. Essentially, this is about creating a new robust breed with minimal serious diseases or genetic problems.
Is the Cat Cold?
Undoubtedly, the absence of fur is significant for the adaptation of Sphynx cats to their environment. These cats can freeze faster and are prone to sunburn. Otherwise, Sphynx cats are just ordinary representatives of the feline family! They are affectionate, love to play, and, of course, often groom themselves.
