How Magnetic Storms Affect Pets and What to Do About It?

From November 22 to 26, Earth is expected to experience a magnetic storm, according to forecasts from specialists at the Laboratory of X-ray Astronomy of the Sun of the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics. Although the level of the magnetic storm is G, indicating its weak intensity on a five-point scale, some people may experience discomfort. They may have migraines, weakness, pressure fluctuations, and mood changes.

Magnetic storms also affect animals, as confirmed by zoologist and candidate of biological sciences Philipp Tumasyan.

“Magnetic storms affect animals similarly to how they affect humans. Animals, more than humans, use the Earth's magnetic field as one of their senses. Therefore, geomagnetic changes impact their bodies, and animals are capable of sensing this,” explains Tumasyan.

Animals and Humans — Similar Reactions

Bears, woodpeckers, and capybaras are influenced by magnetic storms, but the reaction of each species will be different, claims the specialist.

“Of course, there is a difference in how different species of animals endure magnetic storms. However, it is worth noting that this issue has not yet been thoroughly researched from a scientific perspective. ‘I can only rely on my observations and feelings,’ says the zoologist. ‘At some point, one animal may show less activity, while another may lose its appetite. Some will sleep more, and there are those who will not notice the magnetic storm at all. But one thing is common for all animals — their hyperactivity on such days is unlikely.’”

Birds Lose Orientation

As for birds, on days of geomagnetic changes, they may lose their course. Although they will not fly into the walls of buildings, they can lose their bearings. According to ornithologist Evgeny Koblik, the Earth's magnetic fields serve as a kind of navigator for feathered creatures.

“In their brains, there is a kind of magnetic map, a magnetic compass. Thanks to this, they are able to migrate to specific locations. It is suggested that during magnetic storms, birds may lose their course and land not where they intended. Magnetic fields can change significantly, and when this happens, birds become disoriented,” noted the ornithologist.

In general, all animals are sensitive to changes in the weather. Even slight deviations in the Earth's crust can be sensed by them, and they can even predict earthquakes.

“Humans are unable to perceive these tremors and do not realize that an earthquake may occur soon, while animals already feel the tension in the Earth's crust. These can be weak tremors. Most animals have sensory organs, including the perception of magnetic fields, that are more developed than those of humans,” added Philipp Tumasyan.

Take Care of Your Pets

Pets, like all animals, are also sensitive to changes in the weather. On such days, it is better to protect them and not disturb them unnecessarily.

“On these days, it is better not to overload them and stick to their usual routine. It is advisable to avoid trips, long walks, and other activities that may create additional stress for the pet. This will help them cope with the magnetic storm more easily,” added Tumasyan.
