Only if the food is adapted for them.
These animals, being carnivores, are not able to efficiently extract nutrients from plant sources. However, if proteins are pre-hydrolyzed into amino acids (that is, effectively digested), they are well absorbed in the intestine.
Thus, cats and dogs require food that, firstly, is enriched with amino acids, trace elements, and vitamins to 'meat' levels, and secondly, contains these substances in a form suitable for absorption.
Nevertheless, such a diet often leads to disorders related to a deficiency of sulfur-containing amino acids, as well as certain trace elements and vitamins.
