Urban foxes are starting to resemble dogs

In urban settings, one can encounter not only dogs, cats, and pigeons with sparrows, but also animals that are not typically associated with city life — for example, foxes. These urban foxes, although slightly, differ from their wild relatives.

Researchers from the University of Glasgow compared London foxes with their 'non-urban' counterparts and found that urban foxes have a different muzzle shape, a smaller skull, and that females and males are less distinguishable from each other.

Similar changes are observed in animals during the domestication process, and in this context, urban foxes are beginning to resemble dogs, cats, and other pets. (Although it is worth noting that dogs have undergone much more significant changes, which is quite understandable — they were domesticated many centuries ago.)

Interestingly, signs of domestication in foxes have arisen simply as a result of living in an urbanized environment, without any human intervention. However, one should not expect urban foxes to become as tame as dogs.
