Why Do Moose Seek to Lick Salt?

A lack of salt negatively affects the health of animals.

Moose, like other ungulates, show an interest in salt, and this is understandable. The diet of a moose primarily consists of plant food, including grass, green leaves, tree shoots, and more.

Plant food contains almost no salt, and its deficiency can negatively affect health. For example, pregnant moose may experience metabolic disorders, leading to problems in the development of their offspring.

In males, a lack of salt halts antler growth. Therefore, animals are forced to seek salt in their environment.
