How to Choose Winter Gear for Small Dogs

Small dogs are particularly vulnerable to the cold due to their low muscle mass and thin undercoats. In winter, it is important to choose the right gear so that pets do not get sick, experts said.

Even among small breeds, there are differences in their resistance to low temperatures. "Spitz dogs tolerate the cold much better than other small breeds. However, there are also little ones with rare undercoats: for example, Chihuahuas and Chinese Crested dogs. For them, the cold is deadly, so it is important to keep them warm and protect them during exacerbations of illnesses," noted dog handlers.

Experts recommend forming a basic winter wardrobe for mini pets from three essential elements.

Firstly, outerwear: a sweater for dry weather, a raincoat for transitional seasons, and an insulated overall for freezing temperatures. The materials should be natural and waterproof, and the size must fit the dog's build precisely.

Secondly, footwear. It protects the paws from freezing and contact with de-icing agents. It is better to choose models with strong Velcro and gradually accustom the pet to wearing them at home.

And finally, a headgear. A balaclava is especially useful for dogs with exposed ears. It should go around the pet's neck so that they cannot remove it during a walk. Such a hat will protect against the wind and prevent the development of otitis.

When choosing gear, one should not chase fashion. The main thing for the pet is comfort and safety, not appearance.
