How did wild kangaroos end up in the UK? Their numbers are increasing

Dwarf kangaroos — wallabies — have increasingly been spotted in the UK. Initially in the wild, and recently Britons have also noticed them in their gardens, reports the Daily Mail.

Initially, they inhabited only a few regions, but gradually the situation changed due to human intervention. They were brought to the British Isles at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries — there was a trend for exotic animals at that time. The trend passed, and the little creatures were simply released into the wild, where they managed to reproduce in the meadows of Britain.

Their exact number in the country is currently unknown. Many scientists thought that the population had disappeared, as these animals had not been seen in the country since 2000. However, recently they have been spotted more frequently in various counties.

Counting the number of wallabies is not easy. Scientists can only monitor media materials featuring the animals on social networks. This is how they discovered that from 2008 to 2018, red-grey kangaroos were seen in England about a hundred times.

However, experts believe that their population is decreasing due to harsh climatic conditions, snowfall, and road accidents. Additionally, since 1981, there has been a law in the country that prohibits the release of captive kangaroos into the wild.
