Why You Should Start Feeding Birds in Autumn

Ornithologist Alexander Rezanov recommended starting to feed urban birds as early as autumn.

How to Properly Feed Birds

In winter, birds often find food and shelter in cities, while waterfowl can access unfrozen water bodies. However, to ensure they know where to find food when the cold arrives, it is important to start feeding them in advance and do so regularly. Feeders should be placed in quiet areas — near vegetation and at heights inaccessible to cats and dogs. Structures with roofs and sides that protect the food from snow and moisture are especially convenient in winter.

What to Give Different Species

Sparrows, pigeons, gray crows, and jackdaws can be fed on the ground. For tits, nuthatches, and woodpeckers, a piece of unsalted lard hung near a window will suffice. Finches, greenfinches, and sparrows enjoy seeds, grains, and crusts of white bread. Waterfowl are recommended to be given boiled eggs, low-fat cottage cheese, oats, and cereals.

What to Avoid

The ornithologist warned against using soggy bread — it often develops mold that causes aspergillosis, a dangerous respiratory disease. Birds should not be fed salty, fried, smoked, or spicy food.

Regular and safe feeding helps birds survive winter more easily and supports the populations of urban birds.
