Should You Walk Your Dog in Bad Weather If Your Pet Doesn«t Want to Go Outside?

When the weather is bad outside, some dogs show a reluctance to go out. Should you force your pet to go for a walk? Veterinarian Natalia Pavlova advises against it.

"The minimum walking time is 15–20 minutes. But if the animal is uncomfortable, tired, or cold, it will let the owner know that it wants to go home. In this case, it is not worth forcing a long walk. You can limit it to a bathroom break outside and end the walk. In the context of hypothermia, the animal's body experiences stress: there may be a decrease in immunity and exacerbation of some chronic diseases or infections," commented the veterinarian.

She explained that for some pets, rain, snow, and puddles underfoot are additional stress factors that cause them to refuse to walk.

"It's not a big deal if autumn walks are temporarily short. Gradually, the pet will adapt to the weather and will walk longer," the specialist concluded.
