Dog Breeds Most Susceptible to Tail Injuries Named

Boxers, English springer spaniels, and cocker spaniels are the most susceptible to tail injuries. These are the results of a new study conducted by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC).

For example, boxers seek veterinary help for this issue 3.61 times more often than other dog breeds. Springer spaniels injure their tails 2.46 times more often, while cocker spaniels do so 1.86 times more often.

Decorative breeds and brachycephalic dogs sustain such injuries less frequently. French bulldogs (a breed with congenital short tails) have virtually zero risks, writes Animal’s Health.

Researchers examined records of approximately 2 million dogs that sought veterinary assistance since 2019. It turned out that this problem occurs in one out of every 435 animals.

There is also a dependence on the size of the dog. "For animals weighing between 20 and 30 kg, the risk of tail injuries is 1.65 times higher compared to dogs weighing up to 10 kg," the researchers note.

Another interesting pattern is that the risk of tail injury decreases with age. For animals older than 12 years, the risk is minimal compared to pets under two years old.
