Why Do Dogs Get Tear Stains and How to Deal with Them?

Tear stains in dogs can appear for various reasons — from external irritants and allergies to eye infections.

It is important to distinguish between natural factors and signs of diseases, as well as to remember regular eye hygiene for pets, experts said.

Most often, tearing is associated with external factors: wind, sunlight, dust, or dry air from central heating. Usually, this is a temporary phenomenon that does not require intervention. The exception is when foreign bodies enter the eye, in which case it is necessary to urgently consult a veterinary clinic.

Allergic reactions can also cause excessive tearing. In such cases, it is important to identify the irritant and consult a veterinarian.

Brachycephalic breeds are particularly prone to tearing: pugs, French bulldogs, Yorkshire terriers. For the latter, the problem is complicated by their long fur.

Dangerous causes of tear stains include eye infections, such as conjunctivitis. This is accompanied not only by discharge but also by purulent deposits, redness, and itching. Other issues may arise from trichiasis, narrowing of the tear duct, or oral cavity diseases. In puppies, tearing is sometimes associated with teething.

Stress and excitement can increase discharge, especially in animals predisposed to tear duct problems.

Experts recommend regularly caring for pets' eyes using special wet wipes and lotions. Additionally, tear stain powder can be used to help remove stains from fur. In case of any suspicious symptoms, it is important not to self-medicate and to consult a veterinarian.
