It is important to gradually accustom the dog to the owner's absence at home. This important skill will protect it from stress and anxiety. This was reported by veterinarian Tatiana Golneva.
“When a dog is left alone, it needs to understand that the owner will return. Some animals have heightened anxiety: they whine, bark, or chew on things, trying to cope with fear and regain the owner's attention,” the expert explained.
According to her, it is necessary to instill confidence in the pet that the owner always comes back. Training should start with short intervals and moving to another room.
“Intervals should be gradually increased. If the dog sees that you are home but physically unavailable, it understands that nothing bad is happening. This is the optimal way to maintain the animal's mental health,” Golneva explained.
Additionally, the veterinarian recommended keeping the dog occupied in the owner's absence. For this purpose, one can leave intellectual toys or food-dispensing toys next to the animal.
“Intellectual toys are very helpful. Some toys can be filled with food, and the dog gradually retrieves it, entertaining itself. Such toys keep the pet busy, teach independence, and reduce anxiety during the owner's absence,” the specialist concluded.
