Where to Use Onion Peels in the Garden: 6 Ways to Apply Them

Onion peels are a waste product that can be found in any kitchen. However, not all gardeners know that peels can be used beneficially for their plots.

Proper use of onion peels can help achieve a good harvest and protect the garden from pests.

1. Treating Potato Tubers

Before planting, potato tubers need to be treated to protect them from pests that can damage the tubers in the soil.

For this, take 2 kg of onion peels, pour in 5 liters of water, and boil for 20 minutes. After cooling, the potatoes are generously sprayed with the broth before being planted in the ground.

2. Mulching Beds

Mulching helps retain moisture in the soil and protects the harvest from spoilage. Onion peels can be used for mulching tomatoes and peppers.

To prepare the mulch, the peels are mixed with compost and laid in a thin layer under the bushes. It is also worth noting that the peels repel pests.

3. Protecting Beds from Pests

Onion peels help get rid of pests such as aphids, whiteflies, and Colorado beetles.

To treat the area, pour 2 kg of peels with 3 liters of water and boil for 30 minutes. Then let it steep for a day. The resulting broth is strained and sprayed using a sprayer.

4. Fertilizer

Peels contain many nutrients for plants. They are most often used to feed cucumbers and tomatoes. For fertilization, the peels are soaked in water in a ratio of 1 to 2 and left to steep for 2 days.

The resulting infusion is strained and used to feed the plants. At least 200 ml of fertilizer is required per bush.

5. Soil Restoration

Clayey and hard soil can lead to low yields. To make the soil loose, onion peels can be used. The process is simple: the product is spread in a thin layer and mixed with the soil.

At least 5 kg of peels should be used per 1 m². Over time, the peels decompose and become a quality organic fertilizer.

6. Boosting Seedling Immunity

Weak seedlings may struggle with transplanting into the ground. To boost plant immunity, seedlings should be watered with a light onion peel solution.

To prepare the solution, 1 kg of peels is poured with 5 liters of water and boiled for 10 minutes. The strained solution is used to water the seedlings once every 10 days.

Onion peels are a real treasure for gardeners. However, it is important to prepare the solution correctly to avoid harming the plants.
