How to Properly Water Onions for Large Bulbs

Bulbs form within two months after planting, so during this period, gardeners should closely monitor watering.

At this time, the soil in the bed should remain moist. If there is no rain and the weather is hot, onions should be watered 1-2 times a week.

It is recommended to prepare the water for irrigation in advance: collect it in a metal barrel, where it will warm up during the day. Warm, settled water positively affects the growth of onions: the plants are less stressed, develop better, and the bulbs become larger.

Sometimes the onion tops start to yellow. Many gardeners mistakenly believe that this is due to a lack of water and begin to water the plants more intensively.

However, this can lead to bulb rot. Yellowing can also be caused by onion flies. To combat the pest, salty water can be used.

For the first watering, 300 g of salt is required for 10 liters of water. For the second watering — 400 g, and for the third — 600 g. Thus, over three weeks, one can get rid of onion flies and lay the foundation for a good harvest.
