In modern social networks, it has become popular to practice asceticism for desire. For example, many declare: "I am taking asceticism for a month: I refuse sweets and alcohol." If they manage to hold out, the universe will fulfill their desire. But is this really related to asceticism?
No, it has nothing to do with asceticism. This viewpoint was expressed by psychologist Nelly KUPRIYANOVICH in an interview for "AiF".
Asceticism (from the ancient Greek ἄσκησις — "exercise" and ἀσκέω — "to exercise") represents a voluntary exit from the comfort zone aimed at achieving spiritual, material, and personal goals through self-restraint, self-discipline, and self-denial. The main tools of asceticism are prayer and strict vows that test willpower and strengthen inner resilience. This practice can be carried out through both physical and intellectual exertion.
Nowadays, it has become popular to take on asceticism for the fulfillment of desires. The essence of this practice is that by sacrificing something, a person hopes that the universe will fulfill their dreams.
However, according to the psychologist, achieving goals and realizing desires do not depend on self-restraint. A desire can only be fulfilled in the presence of positive intentions and correct, healthy actions.
— It seems strange. For example, if a person abstains from alcohol or sweets for a month, what will happen afterward? If the desire is not fulfilled, will they return to their old lifestyle? – the expert reflects. – There is nothing ascetic about this. It’s not quite about willpower. Rather, it’s a way to attract attention to oneself and gather likes on one hand. On the other hand, such a public declaration of asceticism is necessary for a person to obligate themselves to keep their promises.
According to the psychologist, asceticism is directed towards spiritual aspects. By practicing asceticism, a person frees themselves from excess to better understand and accept God.
To change one’s life, one must start with changing oneself. The idea of achieving goals through asceticism is based on the understanding of self-sacrifice and testing the spirit. We must realize that for the sake of change, we will have to give something up.
