The Dentist Explained How Alcohol Affects Dental Health

Dentist Anna Zorina emphasized that alcohol has a destructive effect on the body, including the teeth. Alcoholic beverages, due to their complex effects, disrupt the mineral balance of tooth enamel, reduce calcium levels, leading to increased brittleness of teeth, their chipping, and the formation of cracks in the enamel.

“Some types of wine can stain enamel, changing the color of teeth. The belief among some wine lovers that a piece of cheese eaten after a glass of the drink protects enamel from staining is a myth that has nothing to do with reality!” the specialist added.

The doctor noted that strong and low-alcohol drinks with high sugar content and artificial colorants are particularly dangerous for teeth. An excessive amount of sugar in the oral cavity is the main risk factor for the development of caries, as it creates an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply.

“Regular consumption of ethanol causes dry mouth, affects the composition of saliva, and leads to increased plaque and tartar formation. Salivary enzymes naturally cleanse the oral cavity and neutralize harmful bacteria. The predominance of yeast and sugar in alcohol can cause an imbalance in the microflora and lead to fungal infections,” emphasized Zorina.

Alcohol also negatively affects the condition of the gums. Abuse of alcoholic beverages worsens the condition of blood vessels, leads to a deficiency of certain trace elements and vitamins, which, in turn, contributes to the development of periodontitis. Gums become inflamed, start to bleed, and there is resorption of bone tissue, which can lead to loosening and loss of teeth, the doctor concluded.
