Don’t Mow Too Early: Until When Should You Mow the Lawn in Autumn

A dense spring lawn is formed right now. Therefore, it is important to properly conclude the season of lawn care.

Autumn lawn care is preparation for the active start of grass growth in spring. The appearance and health of the lawn in the next season depend on what we do now, before winter arrives.

To protect the grass cover, it is necessary to prepare it for winter before the cold weather and snowfall. You need to remove excess leaves from the lawn and mulch the remaining ones, eliminate weeds and debris, fertilize, and trim in a timely manner.

If you want to see a strong green lawn next spring, do not neglect autumn care. By starting this now, you can avoid excessive stress on the grass cover during winter. This will allow the grass to accumulate strength, strengthen its roots, and become more resistant to diseases. We explain when the last mowing of the season takes place.

Autumn Lawn Mowing

Do you need to mow the lawn in autumn, and when should you trim the grass for the last time before winter? The best way to mow lawns in autumn is to achieve an ideal height of about 5-8 centimeters for the end of the season. This is the perfect length for grass blades, as it provides a good surface area for maximum photosynthesis. This gives the grass the opportunity to accumulate as much energy as possible before the winter dormancy period. Such length also helps maintain healthy roots.

If you mow the grass too short, the roots will also become shorter due to a lack of nutrients, making it harder for the grass to survive the winter. At the same time, taller grass will be more susceptible to rot and other diseases. It is not necessary to change the mowing frequency in autumn until it is time for the final cut. Mow as often as necessary to maintain the recommended grass height.

Remember that it is important to change the mowing direction — each subsequent pass should be perpendicular to the previous one. This approach helps avoid tilting the grass in one direction and the formation of waves and unevenness on the lawn surface. Stop mowing about a week to a week and a half before serious frosts arrive, when the grass will enter a dormant state.

As a rule, the last mowing of the lawn is done in the second half or at the end of October, no later than the first days of November.
