How to Obtain Savoy Cabbage Seeds by Yourself?

An experienced gardener, agronomist Alexander Khorobrovets shares.

  • For seed purposes, at the end of the growing season, select healthy typical Savoy cabbage plants and dig them up with the roots before the onset of stable frosts. Early varieties for seed purposes should be sown one month later than commercial varieties in the first year, so that the mother plants can mature before winter and be well preserved. Trim the lower leaves of the mother plants, leaving three to four green leaves attached to the head.

Place the dug-up mother plants with roots in the basement in specially dug trenches 15-20 cm deep, covering them with dry soil.

In the spring of the following year, a week before planting in the ground, remove the leaves from the ends of the stalks. Planting of the mother plants can be done as early as late April to early May in prepared soil according to a scheme of 70x50 cm. To avoid cross-pollination, the mother plants should be of the same variety, and the plot should be removed from areas where other cabbage seed crops are grown. Before flowering, inspect the plants, removing those affected by vascular bacterial wilt and those that are lagging in growth.

Then tie them to a trellis or stakes. During flowering, set up beehives near the plot for pollination by bees. In early August, as the pods mature, cut branches from the seed plants, which should first be ripened and dried under a canopy, and then threshed. Dry the seeds to a moisture content of no more than 9% and clean them. Their viability lasts from three to five years.
