Vegetable Capable of Reducing the Risk of Diabetes

Consuming this vegetable may help normalize blood sugar levels.

A perennial herbaceous plant with a characteristic smell and sharp taste has been cultivated by humans for over five thousand years.

In Ancient Greece, this vegetable was considered sacred due to its structure resembling the arrangement of the universe. The Egyptians used it in ritual burials as a symbol of eternal life. We are talking about the common onion.

Since ancient times, it has been believed that the sharp vegetable that causes tears can serve as a remedy for many diseases. And this is indeed true: onions are rich in vitamins B, C, and A, as well as potassium, magnesium, iron, and protein.

An Unexpected Property of Onions

Recently, scientists from Delta State University in Abraka (Nigeria) have focused on the healing properties of onions. They have proven that onions can help in the fight against diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. The results of the study were published in the journal Science Daily.

During experiments, it was found that in patients with type 2 diabetes, the consumption of onions leads to a significant reduction in blood glucose levels. Experiments on rats showed that different doses of onion extract (400 or 600 mg per kg of body weight per day) reduced the blood sugar levels of the rodents by 50% and 35%, respectively.

Thus, patients with diabetes are recommended to include onions in their diet.

Moreover, scientists noted that the consumption of onions speeds up metabolism and increases appetite. Researchers admit that despite the encouraging results, they still need to determine how exactly the healing effect of onions works.
