Lidl introduces bags with fruit and vegetable sets: 3 kg for 2 euros

To reduce food waste and give a second chance to visually imperfect but completely safe-to-eat fruits and vegetables, the Lidl retail chain is introducing a new product in all stores – bags with a set of fruits and vegetables (photo). Starting from January 12, customers can purchase a bag weighing about 3 kilograms with a mixed set of fruits and vegetables for 2 euros. The availability of bags with fruit and vegetable sets in stores may vary, as they are filled according to the situation on the shelves.

These sets are available in the fruit and vegetable sections of all Lidl stores. Each bag is filled with various vegetables and fruits that may have minor visual defects but remain high quality and safe for consumption, as they are 'too good to throw away.' This is one of Lidl's common and successful practices that has already proven popular in other countries.

The price of one three-kilogram bag with a fruit and vegetable set is 2 euros. They are pre-packaged and placed in paper bags. The bags may contain fruits and vegetables such as apples, oranges, cucumbers, broccoli, bell peppers, and more. The contents of the bags will never be the same and will vary depending on the assortment available in the store at a specific time. If multiple bags with vegetables and fruits are offered in the store, the customer can choose one of them, but the composition of the bags cannot be changed.

To make the purchasing process more convenient, there is a barcode on the bottom of the bags that can be easily scanned at both traditional and self-service checkouts.

For the fruit and vegetable sets, store employees carefully select clean, still high-quality products, excluding delicate and perishable items that quickly lose flavor and nutritional value. For example, berries that can easily get crushed are not included in these bags.

“All fruits and vegetables that are grown and transported have an impact on the environment, and simply throwing away some of them when they are still suitable for consumption seems unreasonable. Last year, we tested this initiative in several Lidl stores in Latvia and saw a great response from customers, as the residents of Latvia understand well that a small visual defect does not make a product less tasty or valuable. Starting this week, such bags are available in all Lidl stores, and we are confident that they will become a popular choice among customers,” said Antra Birzule, head of corporate social responsibility at Lidl Latvia.

It is important to note that the availability of bags with assortments of fruits and vegetables may vary between different stores. Since the freshness of these products at Lidl is checked several times a day, such bags may appear in stores at different times. In one store, they may be offered in the morning, afternoon, and evening, while in another, only in the afternoon, and their continuous availability is not guaranteed.

In Europe, this initiative has been implemented in Lidl stores since 2016. Now it has reached stores in Latvia and Estonia. In Lithuania, bags with fruit and vegetable sets have been available since 2023.

Additionally, Lidl continues to support the initiative “Don’t Eat the Earth”, which encourages people to rethink their eating habits and reduce food waste. The foundation of this campaign is a simple idea – everyday choices can become a powerful tool for caring for our planet. “By consuming more fruits and vegetables, we contribute to mindful eating – an approach that allows us to enjoy food, gain energy, and at the same time cause less harm to the world. A bag with a fruit and vegetable set is a simple and important way to combine savings, sustainability principles, and health care,” emphasizes A. Birzule.
