Five Reasons Not to Completely Abandon Red Meat

Red meat is currently under criticism, and it is recommended to consume it in smaller amounts, or better yet, to replace it with chicken breasts — which are considered safer. However, why should we not completely exclude "real" meat from our diet? Let’s figure it out.

First, let’s consider all the negative consequences that scientists believe may await those who prefer meat. According to a number of studies, excessive consumption of red meat can lead to the development of certain types of cancer, including colorectal, pancreatic, and prostate cancer. Additionally, lovers of fatty red meat risk harming their blood vessels by raising cholesterol levels. Fatty meat can also contribute to weight gain and related problems. So, should we really forget about juicy steaks? No, we shouldn’t. Now, let’s explain why.

1. Prevention of Musculoskeletal Diseases

Red meat is an important source of protein. What is protein? It is the building material for the human body. Studies show that the consumption of red meat helps maintain (and in combination with physical activity, increase) muscle mass and strengthen bones. Elderly people who include red meat in their diet have fewer hip fractures. However, this refers to moderate consumption of lean meat. Otherwise, one may face issues related to excess weight, digestion, and the cardiovascular system.

2. Prevention and Treatment of Anemia

Red meat is rich in iron, which is necessary for normal blood formation. Iron deficiency leads to a decrease in hemoglobin levels, which, in turn, worsens the supply of oxygen to tissues and organs. During periods of intense exertion, as well as during active growth and recovery after surgeries, red meat becomes particularly important. Studies show that iron from meat is absorbed significantly better than from plant sources. It is not necessary to eat it in large quantities, but regular consumption will be beneficial.

3. Prevention of Depression

There is evidence that giving up meat can lead to an increased tendency towards anxiety and depression. This is related to a deficiency of essential amino acids, magnesium, and B vitamins, especially B12. Red meat helps replenish these substances and contributes to the normalization of the nervous system's functioning.

4. Source of Zinc

Zinc is necessary for maintaining the immune system, regulating insulin production, and is known as the “beauty mineral.” It helps stabilize the function of sebaceous glands, reduces inflammation (which is beneficial in treating acne), and stimulates collagen production (maintaining skin elasticity), as well as strengthening hair and nails.

5. Source of Omega-3 and Omega-6

The highest amounts of essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6 are found in grass-fed beef. Why are they needed? These acids have anti-inflammatory effects, help lower blood pressure, and regulate cholesterol levels in the blood. Thus, not all red meat “clogs” our vessels with cholesterol plaques. The key is to make a conscious choice and consume it in reasonable amounts.
