On the first working day after the recent holiday weekend, the State Police stopped nine drivers of vehicles who were driving under the influence of alcohol, according to summarized statistics from the Police.
Seven detained drivers were heavily intoxicated, drove without a license, or caused accidents. Two offenders were held administratively liable, which means that their blood alcohol concentration did not exceed 1.5 per mille.
As part of two initiated criminal proceedings, vehicles were confiscated from drunk drivers, and in seven cases, a monetary amount will be recovered from them, which may reach the value of the vehicle used at the time of the offense.
As reported, during the five festive days, the police detained 81 drivers under the influence of alcohol on the roads of Latvia, including in 53 cases where criminal proceedings were initiated, which mainly indicates that the drivers were heavily intoxicated.
This year, during the two official holidays - Ligo and Janis Day - the police detained 39 drivers under the influence of alcohol on the roads of Latvia, while last year, during the two holidays, only 23 drunk drivers were detained, and in 2024, there were 36, according to data from the LETA agency archive.
