Last autumn, the Augšdaugava municipality decided to transfer part of the property of the former Rauda school, located 40 kilometers from Daugavpils, to the state for the implementation of a new project.
Namely, the opening of the Temporary Accommodation Center for Detained Foreigners.
Currently, dismantling works are underway, and the premises are being arranged. There is also a procurement of material and technical equipment for the operation of the center.
Given the current pace of construction, it is predicted that the process will be completed in September of this year. After the facility is put into operation, it will be handed over to the State Border Guard.
The temporary center "Rauda" is being equipped in the building of the former school, and its goal is to ensure that all necessary security, identity, and health checks, as well as border procedures, are carried out quickly, efficiently, and in full compliance with European Union (EU) standards and international human rights standards.
The center's premises will feature well-equipped living rooms with bathrooms, and there will be a kitchen, a recreation room, and a gym for foreigners, where they can move freely. On the fenced territory of the center, plans are in place to create a sports ground, a children's playground, and relaxation areas.
The center will be able to accommodate up to 106 people at the same time. To support it, the State Border Guard will establish a new structural unit here with 36 employees.
It is known that the Rauda primary boarding school was closed when there were only nine students left. Now, however, refugees and their children will live here, and in greater numbers.
