In the Lithuanian district of Anykščiai, a man threatened relatives in the yard on Sunday evening using illegally stored weapons. They called the police, who eliminated the man.

After the arrival of the police officers from the Anykščiai district, a man born in 1951 did not comply with the lawful demands to put down his weapon, which led to the involvement of the anti-terrorism unit Aras.

When the Aras fighters arrived, the man pointed his weapon at them and fired. The police officers were not harmed. In response to the gunfire, the Aras officers began shooting and killed the elderly Lithuanian.

A pre-trial investigation has been initiated. According to anyksta.lt, the house where the deceased man lived is located in a remote area, and the territory is unkempt. The nearest inhabited estate, where there is more active life, is located about 200 meters away.

On Monday before noon, police continued to work at the scene, and the estate's territory was cordoned off with a STOP tape.

The Chief Commissioner of the Lithuanian Police, Arūnas Paulauskas, expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased: "I fully understand that every loss of life is a heavy loss, but at the same time, I want to make it clear: in a situation where shots were fired at the officers and there was a direct threat to their lives and the lives of those around them, they were obliged to act decisively.
