The son of a famous director, accused of murdering his parents, demands part of the inheritance to pay for his lawyer

The son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner, accused of murdering his own parents, has approached the court requesting access to the multimillion-dollar family trust. According to him, the money is needed to pay for the services of a well-known criminal defense attorney.

32-year-old Nick Reiner has filed an official petition for early access to part of the funds from the trust established by his late parents — director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer.

According to Hello!, the value of the fund is approximately $1.5 million. Under the terms of the trust, Reiner was to receive half of the amount upon reaching the age of 30, and the remaining portion at 35. However, he is now requesting access to the second payment ahead of schedule.

Court documents state that the funds are necessary to rehire prominent American attorney Alan Jackson, who is considered one of the most sought-after criminal defense specialists in the U.S.

According to the defense, Jackson stopped representing Reiner back in January after anticipated funding did not materialize. Currently, the accused is represented by a public defender.

The petition claims that the inability to hire a chosen defense attorney could significantly impact the defendant's chances of achieving acquittal.

The high-profile case has shaken Hollywood

The deaths of 78-year-old director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer became known in December 2025. Their bodies, with multiple stab wounds, were discovered by the couple's daughter, Romy Reiner.

From the outset of the investigation, the main suspect has been the couple's son, Nick Reiner, who previously had issues with drug addiction. He was arrested just hours after the bodies were found.

Later, sources familiar with the circumstances of the case reported that shortly before the tragedy, there was a serious conflict between Nick and his parents at a Christmas party hosted by well-known television host and comedian Conan O'Brien.

If the court finds Reiner guilty, he could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

Who is Rob Reiner

Rob Reiner is considered one of the prominent figures in Hollywood. Throughout his career, he directed films such as "Misery," "When Harry Met Sally," "A Few Good Men," "The Bucket List," and several other well-known works.

Additionally, Reiner acted in films. In particular, he played the father of Leonardo DiCaprio's character in "The Wolf of Wall Street." The director was also one of the founders of the production company Castle Rock Entertainment.

He was married to Michelle Singer since 1989. Besides Nick and Romy, the couple raised another son — Jack. From a previous marriage to actress Penny Marshall, Reiner has an adopted daughter.

Nick Reiner's petition could become one of the key episodes in this high-profile criminal case. While the court decides on access to the family trust, the investigation into the murder of the famous director and his wife remains one of the most discussed cases in American show business.
