Dismembered, chopped with an axe, and ground in a meat grinder. This is the state in which the remains of an elderly man were discovered by law enforcement in Kauguri, Jūrmala. During the investigation, it was revealed that the crime was committed by his daughter, whom the man had come to visit. Last summer, 74-year-old Jānis disappeared from the sight of those around him. Locals noticed that he was visiting his 44-year-old daughter Marina in Kauguri. He came to see her as he was her breadwinner, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
"She has mental health issues, and as far as I understand, she is currently in a psychiatric hospital. She has been examined. As far as I know, she is there now. She had a dog, and that dog got sick, died, or something like that... She always walked with it, loved it very much, and then the animal disappeared. This is what a neighbor who lives nearby told me. She had an apartment in Rēzekne; she would come and go. Apparently, she came to bury the dog or do something with it," neighbors report.
However, Jānis was unable to lay his pet to rest. Later, police would find the dog already mummified, wrapped in several blankets and sleeping bags. The man himself would also not leave the apartment under his own power.
"He was taller than my husband, a strong man. We got along well, greeted each other, he walked along the sea. Then he disappeared. I asked the neighbor where Jānis had gone; I hadn’t seen him. I said — he always walked to the sea. She replied that he had been gone since August. Then another daughter, his sister living abroad, started looking for their father," neighbors recount.
At first, a relative came to the apartment in Kauguri to find out what had happened to the man who had not been in contact for a month and a half, but Marina did not let her into her home. After that, police arrived at the address.
"She opened the door, they entered, and the father was already there... (Degpunktā: Was he still in the apartment?) She lived with her father and cut him in half. And those black bags... We couldn’t understand. We were coming back from the store and saw people in special suits and masks carrying out some black bags. (Degpunktā: Was there no smell coming from the apartment?) People in the neighborhood started to smell something and asked each other what had happened. But no one knew anything. And then worms started crawling from the fifth floor to the fourth..." neighbors say.
State Police representative Vyacheslav Gudovsky stated: "During the inspection of one of the rooms, several bags containing cut-up parts of mattresses, pillows, and bedding were found, inside which were fragments of human skin and body parts. Fragments of soft tissues of the human body were also found."
Body fragments of the man were even found in a meat grinder that stood in the apartment. The police report that various items were discovered in the dwelling — an axe, knives, cutting boards for meat, on which biological traces of the missing man were found. The deceased's relative was also detained there, who was recognized as a suspect during the investigation and sent for outpatient forensic psychiatric examination.
Currently, the woman is under strict supervision in a medical facility. The criminal case has been transferred to the prosecutor's office. Such a crime could lead to life imprisonment, but all circumstances and motives of the crime still need to be established during the trial.
It also remains to be determined whether Marina used the mentioned tools and kitchen utensils solely for concealing the body or if cannibalism was involved. Some body parts have still not been found.
